Suez
Canal Hall
The most conspicuous feature in this hall is a Diorama
of the Imperial ship (The Eagle) at the inauguration ceremony of the
Suez Canal in 1869, cruising the Suez Canal from Port-Said to Suez showing
all the landmarks and prominent features of the landscape along both
banks of the Canal. This diorama was displayed for the first time in
an exhibition held in Paris in 1930 and was subsequently donated to
the E.G.S. In addition, a collection of maquetts portraying all the
Suez-Canal citties as they stood in 1930, thus representing a historical
record of how they looked during the first stages of their development.
A large number of photographs showing the different stages of digging
the Canal and the construction of new settlements. The sequence of these
photographs shows the Suez Isthmus with all its topographic and landscapic
features, as it looked before the excavation of the Canal
