Objectives

 

From the very beginning, the E.G.S aimed at fostering geographical knowledge and encouraging the conduction of geographical surveys and field investigations in the different regions of Egypt and in many of the unexplored areas of Africa and the Upper Nile . Over the years, the E.G.S carried out numerous pioneering activities of research in the Egyptian Deserts and the Sinai Peninsula. The findings of these endeavors were included in approximately eighty publications which still represent invaluable references.

The official inauguration of “La Societè Khedivial de Geographie” became a reality after the promulgation of a decree by the ruler of Egypt Khedive Ismail on the 19Th of May 1875 which included the appointment of Prof. Schweinfurth the well known German scientist and explorer as its first president.

As a non- governmental organization, the E.G.S. Present-day functions aim at : enhancing public awareness of Geography as a development- oriented discipline, initiating comprehensive field work in the different regions of Egypt, developing academic and research ties with similar societies in different countries through the exchange of publications and joint research activities, organizing local and regional meetings and exhibitions…….. etc.
For promoting original geographical research, the E.G.S. nominates candidates for national and international scientific awards pertinent to geography and related disciplines.
