• The Egyptian Geomorphological Research
Group (EGRG) was founded in early 2003 under the umbrella of the Egyptian
Geographical Society . The Group is composed of roundabout 150 members
mostly geographers and a number of geologists . The International Association
of Geomorphologists accepted the group's membership . The activities carried out by EGRG included the following : • Several seminars were held to discuss the problems of transliterating scientific Geomorphological terminology. • A field excursion to Baharia Oasis during January 2004 culminated in a scientific report about the most salient geomorphic features in the form of a general reconnaissance survey as a prelude to further detailed studies . • A Symposium was held in the premises of the EGS in the middle of March 2004 under the title "Some Geomorphological Aspects of the Western Desert of Egypt" Some geographers participated . • The EGRG will also participate in the International Geomorphology Conference which will be held in Glasgow, UK in August 2004 parallel to the International Geographical Congress . The conference theme " Geomorphology and Sustainability " will stress on the functioning of geomorphic systems for maintaining the quality of our environments . • A group of some thirty Tunisian members of the "Association of Tunisian Geographers" made a visit to the headquarters of the Egyptian Geographical Society and discussed a number of issues which aim at fostering mutual cooperation within the framework of a Scientific Protocol between the two nongovernmental organizations . The President of EGS Prof. M. S. Abulezz presented a resume of the ongowing activities of the Society . • Two new publications of the Geographical Research Series (GRS) came from the print entitled respectively : "Cairo : Its terrain and Inhabitans" by Dr. Samir S. Mahmoud and " Water and the Omani Society" by Dr. Taha A. Ramadan. • The Egyptian Geographical Society will participate in the 30th International Geographical Congress which will be held in Glasgow from 15"' to 20th August 2004 under the theme "one Earth - Many Worlds" . • It is worth mentioning that the Egyptian members of the National Committee of the IGU compose simultaneously the Board of Directors of the Egyptian Geographical Society. Such organic relationship was acknowledged several decades ago. • The periodicals published by the Egyptian Geographical Society namely : 1. The Arab Geographical Journal ( a bi-annual journal published regularly since 1968). 2. Bulletin of the Egyptian Geographical Society ( an annual journal published regularly since 1876 ). 3. Tlie Geographical Research Series which is an occasional publication • The two volumes of the Arab Geographical journal published in 2003 ( No. 41 , 42 ) included 22 papers submitted by professional academic geographers from the different Arab countries and universities , covering many areas of the Geographical Research. Most of these papers are based on field investigations and studies and represent new contributions. Environmental problems and applied studies , both represent the two mainstays of the papers accepted for publication. • As regards the Bulletin of the Egyptian Geographical Society (vol. 76 2003 ) was published comprising 10 papers contributed by eminent geographers such as :Prof. Andrew Goudi who contributed an important paper entitled " Geomorphological Hazards in Arid Lands : Present and Future", Prof. Jaun Jose Sanz Donaire's paper on Rainfall Randomness in Egypt.......etc. |
