History Of The Society

The Egyptian Geographical Society is one of the most prominent landmarks of modern Egypt. Despite its early establishment in the last quarter of the Nineteenth Century, it is still performing effectively its cultural and scientific objectives on both the national and international levels.

The official inauguration of “La Societè Khedivial de Geographie” became a reality after the promulgation of a decree by the ruler of Egypt Khedive Ismail on the 19Th of May 1875 which included the appointment of Prof. Schweinfurth the well known German scientist and explorer as its first president.

The political changes and developments in the status of Egypt and its transformation from a Khedivate to a Sultanate , to a kingdom have been reflected in the nomination of the society. Hence, its name was altered from “La Societè Khedivial de Geographie” ( 1875 –1916 ) to “Societè Sultanieh De Geographie (1917-1922) to “ La Societè Royale De Geographie d'Egypte “ (1923-1953) and ultimately to “ La Societè De Geographie d'Egypte ” after the proclamation of the Republic of Egypt in 1953 which is still the current name of the society.
