Africa Hall

This hall includes a large collection of old African ethnographical relics depicting Egyptian interest since the early decades of the 19th Century in the Sudan and beyond it. It also reflects the close ties between Egypt and the Sudan and the Egyptian contributions to central African exploration. The most prominent of the African collection is the valuable specimens of dervish arms and accoutrements from Darfour, Bahr Al Ghazal. Somali Land, Abyssinia, and Northern Uganda. Almost all the relics and objects in display, were donated by high ranking army officers who served in the Sudan during the period of condominion rule of the Sudan. One of the chief donors was Mukhtar Pacha the chief of staff of the Egyptian army in the Sudan. The African collection include: swords, rifles, knives, spears, drums, musical instruments… etc. A catalogue of the African collection was prepared by E.S. Thomas way back in 1924, which contained detailed illustration of these African collections.
